Home, of course, isn’t really about houses at all. Despite my interest in “home” as a located place (indeed, places) the real essence of home is a feeling.

What words would you connect with feeling home? For me I would say safe is the primary one and belonging the secondary one. Without these two feelings, a place won’t feel like home even if I call it that name for convenience and live there for years (as with the place I lived from 8 to 18). And you might feel a sense of both safety and belonging somewhere temporary — I had that experience at my first Green Gathering, for example — but it would be odd to call it home if it was only your base for a few days. So, semi-permanence is probably the third quality I would add. Please feel free to add your own feeling words that qualify a place as “home” in the comments! I’m not going to claim universality, and you’re of the nomadic sort, you might skip the last one and have others.
