This is what I love to hear, Allison!

While I celebrate having the great good fortune to have been born female in Scotland, I am increasingly aware of an undercurrent of deep anti-women attitudes that run beneath the veneer of civility we profess to celebrate as a nation. Scratch at that surface and an old hatred, fear and ‘othering’ is evident. We are nothing like as removed from the experience of your footboy as we would like to believe.

Agreed, Debi. When I wrote this, I could really feel all the ways in which it felt very current. Since I wrote it, anti-woman feeling has increased even more, becoming even more obvious and overt, as women (specifically feminists) are getting blamed for male frustration and unhappiness.

Never realised this was happening, even today 😳

Thank you for linking me to this post about the practice of Bacha Posh in Afghanistan, Alastair. I didn’t know about it either, but it makes total sense it would happen in a culture so oppressive to women. How devastating that they have to give up these freedoms on puberty.

The change in what the girls can do, on top of puberty, must be very hard to deal with 🤗
