I am "reading backwards for Christmas". Since I cannot afford to subscribe, I feel obliged to point out a tiny typo here: "Though*t* there was drunkenness and what he calls ‘looseness with ladies’, there was also generosity." (I hope you do not mind.)

Also, in possible redrafts, a pronoun or two were not altered "Our mother takes your father’s death badly." had me confused enough to backtrack in what is otherwise a forward-moving story.
